Congratulations are in order for Oklahoma City Thunder star point guard Russell Westbrook, who wed his longtime girlfriend Nina Earl in a private ceremony in Beverly Hills over the weekend. It’s something about black love that just warms the heart.
The two met while attending UCLA where they were both student athletes. These two are giving me Monica and Quincy, Love and Basketball tease and I’m here for every single minute of it. Being that I’ve been following Nina on Instagram for about two years now which qualifies us as basically BFF’s, I couldn’t be more happier to see two young successful black people come together and form a strong union.
Athletes, especially star athletes get a stigma of marrying a certain type of woman (doesn’t look anything like his mama, usually knows nothing about sports, wasn’t with him while he was shooting in the gym , etc.). I could go on and on but you all get the point. So when athletes like Russell Westbrook, Lebron James, Monta Ellis and Donovan McNabb ,just to name a few, decide to marry the woman who was there before the money, the fame or the attention, its refreshing.
45.2% of black women have never been married which leaves lots of our youth without a model of what a strong union between a black man and black woman looks like. Without these role models the cycle will continue. Thank you to these couples for making the decision to become “one” and set an example because you never know who’s watching.
Congrats Again Russ and Nina!
